*Okadera (Dragonball Temple) Entry: ¥400 Okadera’s formal name is Ryugaeji, Dragon Lid Temple. Legend tells the story of a dragon that was marauding the people of Asuka in ancient times. The monk Gien Sojo fought and defeated the dragon, forcing it to repent of its actions before confining it under a heavy rock, the “ryugae” or dragon lid, in a small pond. He then founded Ryugaeji Temple (Okadera) around the pond with the dragon as one of the deities. The dragon pond is still extant on the grounds of Okadera to this day.
Okadera’s Buddha is the oldest ceramic Buddha in Japan, over 1200 years old. To complement the dragon balls, it’s also a Buddha of wish granting. The wishes of those who are pure of heart are said to come true when they pray to this Buddha.
*Next stop is Ishibutai Kofun: Entry ¥300, the Ishibutai Kofun tomb was likely built for Soga no Umako, a 6th-7th century samurai lord who helped Japan’s Emperor legitimize and profligate Buddhism across the nation. After his death in 626 the Ishibutai Kofun was built to inter his body.
