Asuka has terraced rice paddies, which look spectacular at sunset when the sun reflects off the water.
The area is known for its many ancient burial mounds 古墳 (we will only visit Matsu temple),
but there also are stone monuments in the hills surrounding Asuka that don’t fit with Buddhist style sculpture nor the construction, and no one seems to know or when they were built!!!
The largest of those monuments is known as Masuda-no-iwafune. …… its purpose remains a complete mystery. It is 11 meters, by 8 meters, by 4.5 meters high, and is made of solid granite and weighs about 800 tonnes. It was built in the Kofun are, an era in the history of Japan from around 300 to 538 AD,
It’s a carved mound, with two holes each about a meter square in the center, going through to the ground. So wierd, mystical and incredible:) This monument has been here since Kofun era.
Also we will go to Takamatsuzuka burial mount where the OLDEST paintings were found in Japan! Along the way we will see some terraced rice fields.
